Hi guys,

I got SCPH-1002 with black and white screen as shown in pictures
it seems that marked components are burned. Can you tell me what those are?
Also, there is no pointer, I guess that is another problem?

Looks like luma (brightness) without chroma (color).
Does your TV support PAL video? How is it wired up, Composite, S-video?
I couldn't say if the components are dirty, melted, or exploded.
But they look like resistors or inductors. That's easy to replace.
Use a multimeter to check if they are wired to the video output pins, and have a look at the service manual schematics.

If other components re also damaged, and you can't boot/play games at all, that's more difficult.

I'm certain they're just covered in old flux. It's difficult to tell without either cleaning them or testing them with a multimeter. As NO$CASH said, they're just inductors and they're cheap to replace anyway. Also check the RGB (colour) encoder chip which also looks like it's covered in the burnt flux (like the inductors). From the bad lighting, it even looks like it has a hole in it.

My bet would be to make sure you're not using an NTSC system on a TV which doesn't support PAL (or vice versa) as mentioned. Seeming as your board is a PU-8, you'll need a separate oscillator to drive the correct colour burst frequency to get colour on your TV.

If my memory is right, there is no pointer present if no controller is plugged in (it's just part of how Sony handled the controller logic in the BIOS).

Jup, the console is SCPH-1002 so should be PAL, right? And my TV is definitely PAL as it is bought in Europe. So I would say this is fine. Will reconfirm with TV Model later.

I connected 3 cinch cable via AV MULTI OUT directly to my TV.

Regarding components on the PCB, I tried cleaning a bit with a finger, and some layer went off directly, thats why those components on the right are kinda whitey, they were previously black. Could I here wash carefully with soapy water (like many do) to get it clean?

Regarding pointer, yup I tried with a controller that works on my other PS1 5xxx, so I guess there is something else. Also tried both slots.

And of course, since it is SCPH-1002, CD is dead; no spin but laser head goes up/down. I plan on replacing from SCPH-102 anyhow.

Or, should I use only alcohol for motherboard cleaning?

So, those blacked marked components are going to SERIAL IO and R / L Audio.

Similar looking components can be found on the PCB, in the pic above on the right margin in the vicinity of ABCDEFGH exactly next to DE. Those similar looking are having marking "431" and those seems to be diodes as (if I am not wrong) are having polarity marking.

The flux used by the factories Sony went with isn't water soluble. Alcohol will help dissolve it, but you'll need to use something like a toothbrush to help assist with breaking it down further into the solution.

There is no service manual for the PU-7 or PU-8.

Btw, regarding missing pointer, it might be that my joystick slots PCB is broken, so it won't detect anything even if there is a joystick there. Will try to swap with another one and let you know.

So just finished my tampering with a bunch of PS1 and PSOne that came today to be sacrificed.

To my surprise and delight, they all showed black and white screens, therefore it must be due to the TV. Which is very strange since it's European TV.

I fitted a joystick port from one gutted PS1 and voila, it works. I don't know if it's the ribbon or electronics on the old one, I am tired to investigate at the moment.

And also fitted a BAM laser from PSOne donor and it works like a charm.

The only part missing now is a 5 pin power supply, which will come in soon.

BTW. haven't done any cleaning of the board.
